About this project

From 18 February 2027, no battery can be sold in the EU without a digital passport — and most of the required data sits with suppliers nobody has asked yet. Build a real compliance package for one cell: classify every regulated field, compute the carbon figure, decide who is legally allowed to see what, then trace each missing field to the supplier who owns it and write the request that closes it.

What you'll do

1

Get briefed on the deadline

Meet the case: a battery cell plant in Lower Saxony, a fixed 18 February 2027 deadline, and a rulebook that was still being written. Make your first gut call on whether the cell can be sold, then see the index of what you will build.

2

Sort all 24 regulated fields

Work through the 24 fields the passport must carry and place each one by who physically holds the answer: already known, can be worked out, or nobody has it. Five have no settled answer — write a defence for each.

3

Compute the carbon figure in Python

Use the bill of materials to compute the cell's life-cycle carbon footprint across four stages, then say which stage decided the number and why that changes where you would act.

4

Decide who may see each field

Assign every field to public, legitimate-interest or restricted access, and watch three real passport views build from your choices. Ask what each reader has to DO with a field, not what they would like.

5

Trace the gaps, then file the package

Attribute every remaining gap to the company that measures it, write two supplier requests that would actually get answered, defend a ship/no-ship position at the deadline, and file the package with a cover note in your own words.

What you'll learn

1

A compliance package you can show, not a score

You finish holding a three-part Battery Passport package built entirely from your own decisions — a classified 24-field data model, three access-tiered passport views, and a gap audit with two drafted supplier requests.

2

Read a live regulation and turn it into columns

You work from the real EU Battery Regulation (2023/1542, Article 77 and Annex XIII) and decide, field by field, which answers a plant already holds, which it can calculate, and which live in another company entirely.

3

Compute a life-cycle carbon figure in Python

You run the arithmetic over a real bill of materials in the browser, land on the published figure, and read the finding off your own output rather than being told it.

4

Defend a call where the rules are unfinished

Five of the fields have no settled answer, because the delegated acts were not adopted. Those are graded on your reasoning and what would change your mind — the part that survives the rules landing.

5

Chase data out of a supply chain that does not work for you

You trace each missing value to the company that physically measures it and write requests a stranger could act on without a follow-up call.
