Munich has one of the densest concentrations of student-level roles in Germany. It also has TUM, LMU, several universities of applied sciences, and a very large number of students competing for the same postings.
Here is where the roles actually are and how to be a credible applicant for them.
Who hires Werkstudenten in Munich
Automotive and mobility. BMW is headquartered here, and the surrounding supplier and engineering-services network is enormous. Roles across mechanical engineering, electronics, embedded software, testing and data.
Insurance and finance. Munich is a major insurance centre. Allianz and Munich Re anchor a large ecosystem, with steady demand for students in data, actuarial support, IT and business functions.
Technology. Most large international technology companies run significant Munich operations, alongside a deep local software and semiconductor scene. Strong demand for software, data and cloud roles.
Aerospace and industrial. Aerospace, industrial automation and a broad manufacturing base across the wider region.
Research institutes. The Max Planck and Fraunhofer institutes have a heavy Munich presence and take on student assistants. Often overlooked, genuinely good experience.
Startups. A large and active scene, especially around mobility, climate tech and enterprise software. Broader responsibility than a corporate role, usually lower pay.
Where to search
Start with the official board. The Bundesagentur für Arbeit carries the broadest set, including the mid-sized employers who never appear on paid platforms. Search "Werkstudent" with "München" — the German spelling, not "Munich", which returns noticeably less.
Set a wide radius. Munich's public transport and the S-Bahn network make the surrounding towns entirely commutable. Competition drops sharply outside the centre, and rent does too.
Your university's own board. TUM and LMU both run career portals with postings from employers specifically targeting their students. Smaller pool, dramatically better odds. Most students underuse these.

The Munich-specific problems
Rent. Munich is the most expensive city in Germany for housing, and student accommodation is genuinely scarce. Sort out where you will live before you commit to a role, and look at the S-Bahn corridor rather than the centre. Many students commute in from thirty or forty minutes out.
Competition. Two large universities plus several applied-science institutions plus a magnet job market means a lot of applicants per posting. A generic application in Munich disappears without trace.
German. More Munich roles require working German than the local reputation suggests, particularly in insurance, automotive engineering and the Mittelstand. Technology and research are the most English-friendly. B2 opens most doors that B1 does not.
How to actually stand out
The applicant pool in Munich is deep and uniform. Most competing applications come from students with a comparable degree, at a comparable stage, with a comparable empty experience section.
Two things reliably separate an application from that pile.
One: aim it at the posting. Read Ihr Profil, note the requirements, and reflect that language in the CV and cover letter. German recruiters spot a generic application immediately and it is treated as a lack of interest.
Two: bring evidence. If the posting wants Python or SQL or a specific analysis method and you can only claim it, you are indistinguishable from everyone else. If you can point to a real, graded project in that skill with a certificate a recruiter can independently verify, you have said something none of the other applications did.
That second point is the one worth acting on. Munich competition is not won by writing better adjectives about yourself.
Application timing
Werkstudent hiring in Munich runs year-round, but with clear peaks. Larger employers cluster intake around semester boundaries: postings for the winter semester concentrate in early summer, and for the summer semester around late autumn. Apply six to eight weeks before you want to start.
Structured internship and graduate programmes at the big employers run on fixed annual cycles with deadlines much earlier than you would expect. Check those individually.
Get the documents right
Munich employers, especially the large corporates and insurers, are formal about application documents. That means a proper tabellarischer Lebenslauf, a DIN 5008 Anschreiben, and your Zeugnisse attached as one clean PDF with a sensible file name.
