GATE 2027 is organised by IIT Madras, with registration and information hosted at gate2027.iitm.ac.in. Registration opens on 27 August 2026 and closes on 21 September 2026, with a late window running to 30 September 2026 for an extra fee. The exam itself runs across six days, 6, 7, 13, 14, 20 and 21 February 2027, in two shifts per day, and results are declared on 19 March 2027. This year adds a new test paper, Robotics and Automation, taking the total to 30 papers.
If you are starting your preparation now, in September, you have roughly five months. That is enough time to prepare properly, provided you spend it on the right things in the right order.
Syllabus triage before anything else
GATE rewards depth in your core paper far more than it rewards breadth across adjacent ones. This is the single most common mistake candidates make in their first month: treating GATE prep like a general revision of everything they learned across four years of engineering, rather than a focused mastery of the specific syllabus for their chosen paper.
Start by pulling the official syllabus for your paper and sorting every topic into buckets: topics you are already comfortable with, topics you have seen but are shaky on, and topics that are genuinely new to you. This sorting exercise takes a short, focused sitting, and it should completely reshape how you allocate the next five months. Do not give equal time to a topic you already know well and a topic you have never properly studied. That sounds obvious written down, and it is still the most common way five months of study time gets wasted.
Previous year questions from the start, not the end
A lot of preparation advice treats previous year questions as something you do at the end, a final check before the exam. For GATE, that is backwards. Previous year questions are the clearest signal available for how a topic actually gets tested, versus how a textbook presents it, and reading them early tells you exactly how deep you need to go on each topic in your syllabus triage.
Use them as a study tool from the start: after you cover a topic block, immediately work through the previous year questions on that topic before moving on. This does two things at once. It tells you whether you actually understood the topic or only recognised it, and it builds your feel for GATE's specific question style, which is often more application-focused than a typical semester exam.
A weekly cadence that survives five months
Five months is long enough that an unstructured "I'll study when I have time" approach quietly falls apart partway through. A simple, repeatable weekly structure holds up better than an ambitious but fragile schedule: one topic block of focused study, followed by one timed practice slot applying that topic, repeated across the week. The timed element matters. GATE is a speed-and-accuracy exam like most large-scale competitive exams, and studying a topic untimed for five months and then trying to go fast for the first time in the exam itself is a plan that fails predictably.
Reserve the final month, roughly January into early February, for full length mocks under real timing and for revision, specifically revision notes you wrote yourself during the earlier months rather than someone else's notes. Your own notes, written while a concept was fresh, are a far better final-month revision tool than a borrowed summary, because writing them was itself part of learning the material.
Who should not sink five months into this
It is worth being honest about this before you commit five months, not after. GATE scores feed two outcomes: MTech and other postgraduate admissions, and recruitment by public-sector companies that use GATE scores in their hiring process. If one of those two things is genuinely your goal, GATE is the right exam and this plan is the right approach to it.
If your actual goal is a software engineering or data role in a private company, GATE is not the fastest or most direct route there, and five months spent on it is five months not spent on the thing that private-sector recruiters in those fields actually evaluate: demonstrable project work. A GATE rank does not appear on the criteria most software and data hiring processes screen against. If your target career is in that direction rather than MTech or the public sector, a graded, verifiable project moves you further, faster, than exam preparation aimed at a different audience of employer entirely.
